Eid al-Adha 2020 Special: Hajj

  • Hajj is the fifth pillar of the total five pillars of Islam. All healthy and economically competent Muslims are expected to go on Haj once in their life.
  • Hajj is seen as an opportunity to erase the sins of the past. It is believed that after Hajj, all his previous crimes have been pardoned and he can resume his life. Most Muslims have a desire to go on Haj once in their life.
  • Religious leaders and organizations help those who are unable to afford the Haj. There are also some Muslims who save their lifetime income to go on Haj. Such hajis are also reached from some parts of the world which travel thousands of miles by walking for months and reach Mecca.
  • The five pillars of Islam are important for Muslims. These pillars are like five resolutions. According to Islam, these are very important for living life.

These are the five pillars of Islam

  • Tauheed -  Allah is One and Mohammad is the messenger sent by him, the belief of every Muslim.
  • Namaz - To offer Namaz by the rule five times a day.
  • Rosa- Keeping fast during Ramadan.
  • Zakat - Donating to the poor and needy.
  • Hajj - go to Mecca.

History of Hajj?

  • About four thousand years ago the Mecca field was completely uninhabited. Muslims believe that Allah ordered Prophet Abraham (whom Muslims call Ibrahim) to bring his wife Hajra and son Ismail from Palestine to Arabia to save them (Hajra and Ismail) from jealousy of their first wife Sarah.
  • Muslims also believe that Allah asked Prophet Abraham to leave them on their own accord. He was given some food and some water. In a few days, this stuff was over. Hajra and Ismail were suffering from hunger and thirst.
  • Muslims believe that downcasted Hajra descended from the hills of Safa and Marwa in Mecca in search of help. Hajra, who was broken by hunger and fatigue, fell and he requested Allah for freedom from the crisis.
  • Muslims believe that when Ismail bear down the foot on the ground, a spring of water sprouted from the earth and saved the lives of both.
  • Hajra secured water and also started trading in water for food items. This water is called Ab-e-Zamzam i.e. the water of Zamzam well. Muslims consider it to be the most sacred water and after Hajj all the Haji try to return to their home with this holy water.
  • When Prophet Abraham returned from Palestine, he saw that his family was leading a good life and he was completely shocked.
  • Muslims believe that during this time, Allah told Prophet Abraham to make a pilgrimage and dedicate it. Abraham and Ismail built a small cubic stone edifice. This is called the Kaaba.
  • Muslims come here every year to strengthen their trust in Allah. After centuries, Mecca became a thriving city and the only reason for this was to find a complete source of water.
  • Gradually, people started worshiping different gods here. Statues began to be placed in this holy building built through Prophet Abraham.
  • Muslims believe that Allah told the last Prophet of Islam, Hazrat Mohammad (570-632), that he should bring the Kaaba to the same position as before and allow only the worship of Allah there.
  • In the year 628, Prophet Mohammad started a journey with his 1400 followers. It became the first pilgrimage to Islam and it was in this journey that the religious tradition of Prophet Abraham was reestablished. This is called the Hajj.
