Eid al-Adha 2020 Special: Divisions of Islam Part-2

This is the 2nd part of Eid al-Adha 2020 Special: Divisions of Islam Part-2.

Deobandi and Barelvi

Both names are named after two districts of Uttar Pradesh, India Deoband, and Bareilly.

In the early 20th century, two religious leaders Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (1863–1943) and Ahmed Raza Khan Barelvi (1856–1921) interpreted Islamic law differently.

Ashraf Ali Thanvi was related to Darul-Uloom Deoband Madrasa, while Ala Hazrat Ahmad Raza Khan Barelvi was related to Bareilly.

Maulana Abdul Rashid Gangohi and Maulana Qasim Nanotvi laid the foundation of the Deoband madrasa in 1866. Maulana Abdul Rashid Gangohi, Maulana Qasim Nanotvi, and Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi have played an important role in promoting Deobandi ideology.

Most of the Muslims living in the subcontinent i.e. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan belong to these two sections.

Those who believe in Deobandi and Barelvi's ideology claim that the Quran and Hadith are the main source of their Shari'a, but to follow it, it is necessary to follow the Imam. Therefore, all the laws of Shariah are according to the Fiqh of Imam Abu Hanifa.

At the same time, the people of Barelvi ideology consider Ala Hazrat Raza Khan Barelvi's method more correct. Ala Hazrat Raza Khan's tomb in Bareilly is a big center for those who believe in the Barelvi ideology.

There is not much difference between the two but there are differences in some things. Just like Barelvi believes that Prophet Mohammad knows everything, what he sees, and what he does not. He is present everywhere and watching everything.

Deobandi does not believe in it. Deobandi places the prophet second after Allah but considers him a human being. Barelvis are a follower of Sufi Islam and Sufi Mazars have a lot of importance here, while Deobandis do not have much importance for these Mazars, but they oppose it.

Maliki

The second Imam of the Sunnis, after Imam Abu Hanifa, is Imam Malik whose followers are few in Asia. One of his important books is famous as 'Imam Motta'.

His followers follow his stated rules. These communities are commonly found in Middle East Asia and North Africa.
